Recommended Gear List
Luggage & allowance:
Luggage should be limited to one suitcase (hard-shell or soft-sided) plus a small daypack. Be prepared for a range of weather conditions – it's possible to experience four seasons in one day. We recommend bringing clothing that can be easily layered.
NB: please note there is a 15kg allowance per bag (1 bag per guest)
We recommend the following biking clothes:
shoes: lightweight hiking shoes or sturdy trail running shoes (choose a shoe with a stiff and grippy sole), or regular running shoes will suffice
2 pairs of bike shorts + 1 pair of long cycle pants (or leg warmers, pack one set of ‘cold weather gear’)
bike jerseys/tops: 1-2 base layers or light tops + 1 warmer top + 1 long sleeve lightweight top or shirt + 1 warm/thermal long sleeve
3–4 pairs of cycling socks
long and short cycle gloves (one pair of windproof gloves)
warm hat/buff/beanie to wear under your helmet
waterproof/windproof jacket
waterproof bike pants
sunglasses
We also recommend the following:
bike helmet - compulsory in New Zealand (we can provide a used helmet, but you may wish to bring your own)
Lightweight off-bike shoes/sandals for evenings
water bottles
optional: own saddle (without seatpost)
optional: pedals for bike shoes with cleats
If you have skin that is ‘thin’ or prone to tearing, it may be beneficial to bring some gaiters for protection against the pedals.
Please let PCT know in advance if you are bringing your own saddle or pedals
personal toiletries / first aid kit & any prescriptive medicines you require (MUST HAVE)
small day pack/hydration pack (pannier will be provided)
sunscreen, sunhat, insect repellent & lip balm
swimsuit
laundry bag for dirty clothes
