The most common question we are asked is not which trail, it is how many days. The answer: the South Island rewards whatever time you can give it, and the right itinerary is the one that fits your window, your legs and your idea of a holiday. Here is how the options compare, from long weekends to the full ten-night journey. On all of them, your beds are booked and your bags are moved, so you ride carrying nothing but the day.
First, two choices that shape everything
Guided or self-guided? Guided means riding with one of our expert guides and a support vehicle alongside; self-guided means our route notes, our logistics, and your own pace. Our guided versus self-guided guide walks the trade-offs properly.
How hard do you want to work? Every tour below is e-bike friendly, and our fitness and trail grades page matches trails to riders plainly, no sugar-coating. Confident beginners are welcome on most of what follows.
3 to 4 days: the long weekend
Otago Rail Trail, 3 days. The classic, condensed: big sky country, gold-rush history, country pubs. The best short cycling holiday in the country. See the Otago Rail Trail tour.
Otago Rail Trail, 4 days. The same trail with room to breathe, and a very popular short itinerary for good reason.
Queenstown and Central Otago Highlights. Based around Queenstown, riding the region's best day trails, including Lake Dunstan. Ideal if you want adventure by day and a resort town by night. See Queenstown Central Otago Highlights.
Little River day trip. Not an itinerary so much as an appetiser, an easy escape from Christchurch along the old rail line. See the Little River day trip.
5 to 7 days: the proper escape
Alps 2 Ocean, 7 days. New Zealand's longest continuous ride, from the foot of the Southern Alps to the Pacific at Oamaru. Glacier-blue lakes, the Mackenzie basin, and a finish at the sea. This is the one on most bucket lists, and our seven-day itinerary is the way most riders do it. See the Alps 2 Ocean tour.
Queenstown Central Otago Explorer. The Highlights itinerary grown up: more trails, more days, the full Central Otago picture. See the Queenstown Central Otago Explorer.
West Coast Wilderness Trail. Rainforest, glow-worm gorges, wild coast. Unlike anywhere else in the country. See the West Coast Wilderness Trail.
Otago Triple Treat. Three Central Otago trails stitched into one itinerary, for riders who want variety without repacking logistics. See the Otago Triple Treat.
8 to 10 days: the journey
Alps 2 Ocean, 8 days. The classic with an extra day woven in, for riders who want the same journey at a gentler rhythm. See the 8-day Alps 2 Ocean.
Wilderness, Coastlines and Vines, 10 nights. The guided journey through the top of the South: Marlborough's vineyards, coastal riding, and country that rewards taking it slowly, with one expert guide and a support vehicle the whole way. Days end among the vines with wine at the table and your bed already booked. See Wilderness, Coastlines and Vines.
Alps, Valleys and Lakes, 10 nights. Our flagship, and the itinerary we would ride if we only had one left in us. Ten nights across the South Island's best riding, guided the whole way, with one expert guide and a support vehicle, small groups, boutique stays and local food every night. If you have come from the other side of the world for South Island bike touring, this is the full expression of it. See Alps, Valleys and Lakes.
A sample ten-day shape
Day one, arrive and settle. Then the rhythm takes over: ride through the morning, long lunch somewhere worth stopping, afternoons that end at accommodation chosen because we would stay there ourselves. Lakes one day, river gorges the next, big-sky plateau country after that, and the support vehicle never far if the day asks more than your legs want to give. By the last night you will know the South Island the way only a bike lets you.
Can't decide?
Tell us your dates, your group and your appetite, and we will tell you straight which itinerary fits; three decades of tours means we have seen every kind of rider. We reply within one business day. As an official partner of the Great Rides of New Zealand, Alps 2 Ocean and the West Coast Wilderness Trail, and a Qualmark Gold operator, we are rather spoilt for options to recommend.
Frequently asked questions
How many kilometres do you ride each day? Typically 30 to 60, almost always with an e-bike doing the arguing with the hills. Our grades page shows exactly what each trail asks.
Are e-bikes included? Yes, quality e-bikes are part of how we tour, on guided and self-guided itineraries alike.
Do I have to carry my luggage? Never. Bags are moved for you every day and your beds are booked ahead, on every itinerary.
Can two of us do different distances? You won't need to. Everyone rides the same route together, and the e-bikes are the great leveller: the stronger rider dials the assist down, the other dials it up, and you arrive at the same lunch stop with the same grin. Groups with mixed fitness do this every week.
