There is a particular pleasure in lowering tour-tired legs into hot mineral water while alpine air cools your face, and Hanmer Springs has built a whole village around it. The thermal pools are the famous heart of it: a terraced complex of hot pools at different temperatures, open into the evening, with the Southern Alps standing around like an audience. Around the pools sits a genuinely lovely village: forest walks if you feel like moving, the short stroll up Conical Hill for the view, cafes and good dinners, and the kind of quiet that makes a holiday feel one day longer than it was.
The shuttle has you there by mid-morning, which makes it the perfect decompression chamber: finish your tour, soak the week out of your muscles, and fly home actually rested.
How it works
The escape is one night and the better part of two days, added to the start or the end of your tour. The Hanmer Connection shuttle collects you in Christchurch at 8.30am and has you in the village around 10.30, with the afternoon at the famous Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa, entry included. You stay at The Edit Hanmer Springs, a stylish modern hotel in the heart of the village, an easy stroll from the pools, the restaurants and the cafes, with breakfast at the hotel the next morning. Day two is yours: the boutique shops, the forest walks, the Conical Hill view, or frankly the pools again, before the 4.30pm shuttle has you back in Christchurch by about 6.20.
