"Self-guided" is the most misunderstood phrase in cycle touring. It does not mean you are on your own. It means you ride at your own pace while someone else has quietly taken care of everything that is not riding. Here is exactly what that looks like on a Pacific Cycle Tours self-guided trip, after three decades of tours, family-run by Brett and Judy since 2018.
What self-guided includes
An itinerary crafted around your group. We plan the route, the daily distances and the overnight stops.
Beds booked. Every night's accommodation arranged ahead, chosen because we would stay there ourselves.
Bags moved. Your luggage travels by vehicle each day. You ride carrying only the day's needs.
Quality bikes, fitted to you. Ride a standard bike, or upgrade to an e-bike, which is very good at flattening hills.
Trail notes and local knowledge. Where to stop, what to skip, which pie shop is worth the detour, and straight advice on every trail.
What it does not include is a guide riding beside you or a support vehicle shadowing the group. That is the guided experience, and it is wonderful; our guided versus self-guided page lays out the difference properly so you can choose with open eyes.
Who self-guided suits
Independent couples and small groups who like setting their own pace. Riders comfortable following clear trail notes on well-marked trails. People who want the freedom of travelling independently with the logistics of travelling looked after. If you would rather have an expert alongside and the stories told as you ride, guided is your answer, with one expert guide and a support vehicle on every departure.
The best New Zealand trails for self-guided riding
Alps 2 Ocean, self-guided. The country's signature ride and the most popular self-guided journey we run, over seven days or eight. Well marked, well serviced, endlessly photogenic. See the Alps 2 Ocean tour and the 8-day option.
Otago Central Rail Trail. Gentle grades, friendly towns a comfortable ride apart, and no navigation anxiety whatsoever; the old rail line does the wayfinding. See the Otago Rail Trail tour, and our rail trail map for distances and sections.
West Coast Wilderness Trail. Rainforest and coast on a trail built for touring. See the West Coast Wilderness Trail.
Queenstown and Central Otago. The Lake Dunstan Trail and its neighbours make superb self-guided day sections within a based itinerary. Our Lake Dunstan Trail guide covers the star of the show.
What does a self-guided tour cost?
One figure covers the lot: accommodation every night, the bike, luggage transfers and the planning are priced into the journey, so there are no surprises waiting down the trail. Current pricing lives on each tour's page, and our plain-English guide to what a New Zealand cycle tour costs breaks down where the money goes and why the cheapest-looking options usually cost you somewhere else.
How fit do you need to be?
Less than you think, thanks to careful trail selection and the e-bike option. Our fitness and trail grades page matches every trail to real riders, and our Before You Ride page covers preparation and packing. If you can ride a bike around your neighbourhood comfortably, there is a self-guided itinerary that will suit you.
How booking works
Tell us your trail, your dates and your group, and we will confirm availability and shape the itinerary around your group. We reply within one business day. As a Qualmark Gold operator and an official partner of the Great Rides of New Zealand, the Alps 2 Ocean and the West Coast Wilderness Trail, you will be in careful hands from the first email to the last kilometre.
Frequently asked questions
Is self-guided cycling in New Zealand safe for first-timers? Yes, on the right trail. The Great Rides are purpose-built, well marked and well travelled, and we only point first-timers at trails that suit them.
What happens if the weather turns? The itinerary adapts. The South Island can change its mind, and three decades of local knowledge means there is always a sensible plan for a rough day.
Can we mix guided and self-guided? Talk to us. Some groups pair a guided journey one year with a self-guided return the next.
Are e-bikes included in self-guided tours? E-bikes are an easy upgrade on any self-guided itinerary, fitted to you before you set off. On the two guided 10-night tours they are included as a matter of course.
